PINK RETROSPECTIVE
Een beknopte artistieke en historische terugblik op de LHBTQIA+ gemeenschap* in Venlo.

 

Van 20 september 2024 t/m 22 februari 2025 presenteert House of Confetti – in samenwerking met Pauline Schreurs, Jessie Joosten en Luis Gohmann – de expositie Pink Retrospective. Hierin zijn stemmen te horen en gezichten te zien uit de LHBTQIA+ geschiedenis van Venlo, met een speciale focus op de jaren ’80, een periode van cruciale verandering en groei voor de gemeenschap.

De jaren ’80 markeerden een belangrijke fase in de organisatie en zichtbaarheid van de LHBTQIA+ gemeenschap in Venlo. Met de steun van landelijke organisaties – zoals COC – begon de gemeenschap zich krachtiger te manifesteren en te organiseren. Deze periode legde de basis voor de acceptatie en ondersteuning die nu zo belangrijk is in onze samenleving. Het activisme van lokale groepen zoals COC Limburg speelde een belangrijke rol in deze ontwikkeling. Door middel van activiteiten, ontmoetingen en voorlichtingsbijeenkomsten hebben zij bijgedragen aan de vooruitgang van LHBTQIA+ rechten en acceptatie in Venlo.

Deze expositie herdenkt en viert de bijdragen en impact van allen die een verschil hebben gemaakt en nog steeds maken.

Pink Retrospective toont een verzameling historische covers van de Pink People krant, een destijds essentieel medium voor de LHBTQIA+ gemeenschap. Dit is aangevuld met artistieke en visuele beelden van animator Jessie Joosten en audio-opnames met verhalen uit die tijd, samengesteld door Luis Gohmann en voorgelezen door verschillende Venlonaren. De beelden zijn afkomstig van het Historisch Centrum Limburg Maastricht, het Gemeentearchief Venlo en diverse verzamelaars. Deze verhalen zijn aangevuld met interviews vanuit de hedendaagse LHBTQIA+ gemeenschap, die met hun unieke perspectieven een extra dimensie bieden. Samen vormen deze elementen een levendig en ontroerend beeld van de LHBTQIA+ cultuur in Venlo. De expositie is een eerbetoon aan de vooruitgang die is geboekt en de voortdurende strijd voor acceptatie en gelijkheid.

Als partners in deze expositie spelen Venlo Kleurt en COC Limburg een belangrijke rol in het bevorderen van inclusiviteit en diversiteit in de stad. Hun betrokkenheid onderstreept de inzet voor een inclusievere samenleving en ondersteunt projecten die LHBTQIA+ thema’s belichten.

Pink Retrospective is doorlopend te zien bij House of Confetti, Parade 3A Venlo, vanaf de straatzijde. De audio-opnames zijn elke vrijdag en zaterdag tussen 11:00 en 18:00 uur op desbetreffende locatie te beluisteren.

PINK RETROSPECTIVE
A concise artistic and historical retrospective of the LGBTQIA+ community* in Venlo.

 

From September 20 2024 to February 22 2025 House of Confetti presents the exhibition Pink Retrospective in collaboration with Pauline Schreurs, Jessie Joosten and Luis Gohmann. It features voices and faces from Venlo’s LGBTQIA+ history, with a special focus on the 1980s, a period of crucial change and growth for the community.

The 1980s marked an important phase in the organization and visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community in Venlo. With the support of national organizations – such as COC – the community began to manifest and organize itself more powerfully. This period laid the foundation for the acceptance and support that is now so important in our society. The activism of local groups like COC Limburg played an important role in this development, contributing to the progress of LGBTQIA+ rights and acceptance in Venlo through activities, meetings and educational sessions.

This exhibition commemorates and celebrates the contributions and impact of all who have made a difference and continue to do so.

Pink Retrospective showcases a collection of historic covers from the Pink People newspaper, an essential medium for the LGBTQIA+ community at the time. It also features artistic and visual works by animator Jessie Joosten, as well as audio recordings of stories from that era, curated by Luis Gohmann and narrated by various residents of Venlo. The visuals are sourced from the Historisch Centrum Limburg Maastricht, Gemeentearchief Venlo and various private collectors. These stories are complemented by interviews with members of today’s LGBTQIA+ community, offering fresh perspectives and adding another dimension to the exhibition. Together, these elements create a vibrant and moving portrayal of the LGBTQIA+ culture in Venlo. The exhibition is a tribute to the progress that has been made and the ongoing struggle for acceptance and equality.

As partners in this exhibition, Venlo Kleurt and COC Limburg play an important role in promoting inclusivity and diversity in the city. Their involvement underscores the commitment to fostering a more inclusive society and supporting projects that spotlight LGBTQIA+ themes.

Pink Retrospective can be continuously viewed at House of Confetti, Parade 3A Venlo, from the street side. The audio recordings can be listened to on-site every Friday and Saturday between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
